Hull’s Lib Dem councillors are demanding an apology from the Sun and Daily Mail newspapers over their coverage of Hull’s City of Culture opening week.
At a meeting of councillors next Thursday (19 January) they will demand the newspapers apologise for the unfair, negative and insulting coverage of the city.
The calls follow a number of negative articles from the national newspapers with titles such as ‘Scrapital of Culture’.
Leader of the Lib Dem group on Hull City Council, Councillor Mike Ross, said: “The articles in The Sun and Daily Mail newspapers about Hull are deplorable and they should apologise.
“I have personally written to the editors of both newspapers demanding an apology. We are now calling for the Council to do the same, recognising the outrage at the unjust and inaccurate reporting.
“The articles are an insult to the many individuals, organisations and businesses that have been involved in securing the 'City of Culture' for Hull and who have worked so hard to deliver it.
“I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the many people who have helped to organise, create and manage the Hull 2017 ‘City of Culture’ programme.
“It is a testament to their hard work that the the City is already experiencing a boost in the number of tourists visiting the City. We want to see this covered properly in the national media as well.”
