Sutton village Service of Remembrance for World War One

Sutton village’s refurbished war memorial is set to play a central role in a service of remembrance next week.

The event will take place on 4th August 2014 starting in the church at 9pm it will conclude outside at the War Memorial.

Over the last five months substantial refurbishment has taken place. Work has included the laying of Yorkstone paving to improve access, cleaning of the memorial, tree pruning and the removal of old shrubs.

Extensive research is currently being carried out to provide a full list of all those who never came home from the war in the Wilmington, Stoneferry and St Mark’s parishes. Their names will be added to a roll of honour at the monument in 2018 to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One in 2018.

Sutton ward councillor, Terry Keal, who has been working with residents to get the refurbishment done, said: “In working to get the refurbishments carried out I have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support of people in the area. I’m so glad that most of it has been completed.

“I know many people are planning to attend the service. It’s really important that we remember those who lost their lives in conflicts. In particular I will be thinking about my great uncle, Corporal William Ernest Keal, who lost his life on the Somme battlefields.

“Earlier this year I visited my great uncle’s grave in Saint Perris Cemetery, Amiens. I was moved by the high standard of care taken to maintain each and every grave. The refurbished Sutton war memorial provides an equally fitting tribute to those like my great uncle who fought and sacrificed so much.”

A series of events will take place alongside the service next week to mark the centenary of the start of World War One. The Sutton Exhibition Room & Resources Centre will host an exhibition to commemorate the outbreak of World War One. It will be open from 10am to 3pm on Friday 1st August, Saturday 2nd August , and Sunday 3rd August , and from 6pm to 9pm on Monday the 4th August  6pm to 9pm.

On Saturday 2nd August and Sunday 3rd August the Joint War Organisation will hold a World War One re-enactment event, which will take place between 10am and 2pm outside the Old School Building, Church Street, Sutton.
