Local Councillors "Disappointed" as another alcohol license approved for Newland Avenue

Responding to Thursday 31st October's decision to allow Heron Frozen Foods on Newland Avenue to sell alcohol, local Beverley and Newland Councillor Paul Drake-Davis said:

“I really feel this was the wrong decision for Newland Avenue.  There are clear problems with street drinking, which have been widely reported in the area and I do not see how this will help matters. Police reports say Newland Avenue already has a problem with street drinking and anti-social behaviour. Another shop selling alcohol is not a solution to the problem but a backward step.”

"If any shop, regardless of whether they're a respected retailer like Heron Foods or a small independent convenience store starts selling alcohol, then it will surely only increase the supply of alcohol for consumption on Newland Avenue and the surrounding streets."

"We're very disappointed with the decision which seems to ignore the reports from local residents and traders about the continual problems with street drinking in the area.  We will continue to do all we can though, to help local residents with the problems they are facing as a result of street drinking and the associated anti-social behaviour."
