Hull Liberal Democrats have welcomed today’s announcement in the Autumn Statement that letting fees are to be banned.
Many renters are stung with the fee when a tenancy agreement is drawn up by an estate agent. Often the fee far outweighs the actual cost to the agent.
The ban on letting fees along with a series of other measures were being championed by Liberal Democrat peer Olly Grender in the ‘Renter’s Rights’ Bill in Parliament.
Hull Lib Dem Councillor Claire Thomas said: “We welcome the announcement that letting fees are to be banned. However, more needs to be done to ensure renting a home is fair and safe.
“We urge the Chancellor to consider taking up the other measures in Lib Dem peer Olly Grender’s ‘Renter’s Rights’ Bill.
“One in five people in Hull rent, a figure that is set to increase in coming years. It is vital that those people get a fair deal and are able to rent a safe home.”
