Lib Dem Duo: Hull needs urgent funding for SEND crisis

The Liberal Democrats have called for a National Special Education Needs & Disabilities (SEND) plan to standardise SEND placements and provision, backing it with a specific new funding stream following a report. This news comes following a critical report from an Education Select Committee; dated 23/10/19.

Cllr Linda Tock the spokesperson for Education from the Liberal Democrat Group on Hull City Council has written to the Secretary of State for Education; calling on immediate funding & ring-fencing it for pupils with SEND in Hull, she further commented:

“The situation nationally we know is dire; students with SEND are being failed - under the current Ofsted inspection criteria there is too much opportunity for schools and Ofsted to overlook SEND as an issue.

“These children are falling through cracks in the system. The Hull Liberal Democrats would lead a local authority multi-service and partnership strategy to address this – it is a priority issue for Hull as 14% of all pupils in the city are in need of SEND support.”

We welcome some of the recommendations from the Education Select Committee, specifically its recommendation of a separate judgement to be carried out by Ofsted on schools SEND provisions and placements offered.”

Councillor for Boothferry Alison Collinson, who has experience raising children with SEND added:

“In my view there are a lack of SENCOs and the SENCOs that exist are often on part-time contracts and due to school pressures are always called on to cover classes – it needs to be full-time dedicated SENCOs.

I see parents desperate for support and guidance who are lost in a system that isn’t functioning – it can’t go on; the funding must be made available to all SEND related services to reduce the abysmal waiting times for EHCPs & ASD Assessments.”
